The Mission Continues
While the environment of Duquesne invites participation in its
spiritual life and Catholic traditions, we retain the openness
of our Spiritan founders, whose rule calls for dialogue among
people of different faiths and harmony among the many cultures
of the world. Venerable Francis Libermann, who revived the Congregation
in the early 1850’s, was unique among the religious leaders
of his time for carefully instructing his missionaries not to
disturb the cultural identity of the people whom they served.
There is virtually no religious tradition and no cultural background
that is not present in some form on the campus of Duquesne University.
As a Catholic university, Duquesne is called by the Spirit to
welcome and partner with people of other religions. Their presence
in our midst is the fulfillment of our Catholic identity…
the word catholic literally means universal. We welcome the diversity
they bring, enriching us all as intellectual sojourners who live
by the Spirit and Mission of the University.
