Although Duquesne University’s tranquil campus exists high
on a bluff, seemingly removed from the commotion and concerns
of surrounding city streets, Duquesne students, encouraged by
the leadership of faculty and staff, reach out to neighboring
communities and our neighbors around the world. Volunteer opportunities
abound in university-wide initiatives, Campus Ministry programs,
academic internships and practicum experiences, as well as the
uncounted service projects of our many student organizations.
The Core Curriculum is a series of courses within Duquesne’s
general curriculum that focus on values central to liberal education
and to the Mission of the University.
The purpose of the Core is threefold:
- To encourage students to develop intellectual breadth and
flexibility;
- To develop a knowledge base from which further intellectual
and professional growth may proceed;
- To cultivate the habit of lifelong learning.
The goals of the curriculum are to prepare students:
- To think critically and to develop strategies of problem
solving, using different forms of analysis;
- To write and speak clearly;
- To learn about the diverse cultures of the world;
- To understand the complementary methods of the disciplines
for the study of both new and enduring subjects;
- To raise and examine moral and ethical questions.
